It celebrates on the 18th of August, the International Day of Archaeology, with us! and the II International Week of Archaeology (online) – 18 to August 24, 2025
From the Platform State of Professional Archaeology (PEPA) we put in place an initiative that last year exceeded all our expectations.
Once again, we want to give visibility to you in a participatory way and open, where professionals, and lovers of the discipline can contribute their vision.
Archaeology is not only digs: it is also archival research, restoration laboratory, work in museums, heritage education… and a myriad of areas that are part of this discipline. That’s why, from 18 to August 24, we want to fill our networks of your stories, pictures and experiences.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
📌 If you work in archaeology:
1️⃣ Send a photo of yourself or your team working in the field, lab, museum or archive.
2️⃣ Add a brief message about your work, your site or project, your team-whatever you’d like to share!
📌 If you are a lover of archaeology:
1️⃣ Send us a photo by visiting an archaeological site or a museum.
2️⃣ Recommend a visit: tell us about a place that I have loved, a site essential or your favorite piece in a museum.
📩 Submissions: diaarqueo@plataformadearqueologia.es
(preferably via WeTransfer or platform similar)
Throughout the week we will publish your contributions on our platforms to celebrate the diversity of people, places and stories that make archaeology is so special.
💬 Join, participate and spread using the Hastag of the International Day of Archaeology and the II International Week of the Archaeology

Why the 18 of August?
Since a few years ago, the PEPA made a call on the phone damaged archaeological by the fact that some institutions celebrated days of the archaeology that does not exist: WHY DO we CELEBRATE on THE 18TH OF AUGUST, THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ARCHAEOLOGY? – Platform State of Professional Archaeology
The date on which the archaeologist syrian Khaled al-Asaad was murdered for defending the heritage of Palmyra in front of the destruction, should not be a taboo but a symbol and a day worthy to pay tribute to all the people who, like him, have put their commitment to the culture and heritage even above that of his own life. A day to honor and pay homage to the practitioners of archaeology.
In Spain and other countries, on the 18th of August was traditionally held on the Day of Archaeology, following a medieval tradition of associated trades and professions to patron saints. In our case, the figure is Santa Elena (III century d.C.), the mother of the emperor Constantine, in which tradition attributed the first “dig” in search of relics of the Cross.
